ROME, ITALY / RankWire.AI / – In 2026, Italy experienced its warmest summer since 1950, with an average temperature of 24.3 degrees Celsius across the nation. According to the National Research Council’s Institute for Bioeconomy, this figure surpasses the previous summer record set in 2003, which averaged 23.6 degrees Celsius nationwide. The calculation for summer 2026 covers June through August and relies on temperature measurements taken two metres above ground level. This result places the summer at the top of Italy’s 76-year temperature records.

Italy summer 2026 becomes hottest in records since 1950
    1. Italy’s 2026 summer heat set a national temperature record in data dating to 1950.

August showed the most intense heat, with an average temperature of 25.6 degrees Celsius nationwide. This exceeded the August average from 1951-1980 by 5.2 degrees and was 3.5 degrees higher than the August norm for 1991-2020. The National Research Council’s Institute for Bioeconomy noted that August 2026 beat previous monthly temperature records of 24.6 degrees in 2024 and 24.0 degrees in 2017. The climate dataset used for this analysis, ERA5-Land, is maintained by ECMWF.

Both July and August 2026 rank as the hottest months recorded within the dataset, according to the institute’s heat maps. This record follows a spring season that also set a temperature high, with Italy’s national average reaching 12.1 degrees Celsius. Spring 2024 matched that seasonal record as well. From January to August, each month in 2026 was warmer than the same month in 2025, extending Italy’s prolonged period of elevated temperatures throughout much of the year.

    August Sets New Temperature Milestones

During the first eight months of 2026, temperature anomalies spread across much of Italy. About 70% of the country’s territory recorded anomalies above 1 degree Celsius, with approximately 40% experiencing anomalies exceeding 2 degrees. The most significant deviations occurred along northwestern plains and regions along the Apennines, which include extensive cultivated land. These higher temperatures and associated drought conditions impacted agricultural zones. Major cities like Rome, Florence, and Turin endured multiple heatwaves during June, July, and August.

The record stems from ERA5-Land climate data provided by ECMWF. This dataset offers land-surface climate information dating back to 1950. Researchers used this data to compare temperatures across Italy over the full span. Italy’s summer average of 24.3 degrees was 0.7 degrees above the 2003 benchmark. August’s 25.6-degree figure also surpassed the 2024 monthly record by 1.0 degree. These measurements reflect air temperature at two metres above ground surface.

    Extensive Heatwaves Evident Across Italy

The broader Mediterranean region also experienced extraordinary heat during summer 2026. A separate analysis linked to Italy’s National Research Council found that sea-surface temperatures in the Mediterranean averaged about 27 degrees Celsius in July, marking the highest July average since 1993. The analysis revealed that 79% of the Mediterranean experienced at least one strong or more intense marine heatwave, though these marine temperature readings are separate from the land-based series used to establish Italy’s national summer record.

Italy’s record heat coincided with widespread summer temperature increases across Europe. Climate assessments identify the continent as the world’s fastest-warming region in recent decades. During the summer of 2026, droughts and wildfires affected various parts of Europe. Italy experienced months of temperatures surpassing those of the previous year, including the hottest July and August within the available dataset. Italy’s summer 2026 is now recognized as the hottest meteorological summer since the ERA5-Land series began in 1950.
