Decline in Austria’s Asylum Applications Reaches a Ten-Year Low in July

AUSTRIA / RankWire.AI / – In July 2026, Austria documented 244 new first-time asylum requests, representing the lowest monthly figure in a decade. This number reflects a roughly 65% decrease from the 697 applications recorded in July 2025, as reported by Austria’s Interior Ministry. The total number of asylum submissions, including all subsequent and initial filings, reached 840 in July. These latest statistics highlight a significant downward trend in asylum applications across Austria during the first seven months of the year.

Austria asylum applications fall to decade low in July
Austria reported 244 first-time asylum claims in July, the lowest monthly level in a decade.

Between January and July, Austria received a total of 5,743 asylum requests, a substantial drop from 10,442 during the same period in 2025, indicating a decrease of approximately 45%. The figures encompass various types of applications, whereas the July figure of 244 pertains solely to original first-time claims. The Austrian authorities provide monthly asylum data that distinguish between these categories to offer a more detailed understanding of new versus repeated claims.

In July, Syrian nationals submitted 267 asylum applications, making them the predominant nationality group for the month. The ministry noted that most Syrian applications involved children born in Austria rather than newly arrived applicants. Restrictions on family reunification remain in place for certain asylum cases. So far in 2026, authorities have recorded 60 related entries, compared to 853 during the same period in 2025.

Decreases in Returns and Border Detentions

During the first seven months of 2026, Austria saw more departures than first-time asylum requests. By the end of July, 8,856 individuals had left the country via voluntary departures or enforced removals. Of these, 4,615 were removals, and 4,241 were voluntary departures. The authorities also completed 392 transfers under the European Union’s Dublin system, which allocates responsibility for processing certain asylum applications among member states.

Border apprehensions along Austria’s eastern border in Burgenland have also declined compared to previous years. From January through mid-August 2026, authorities recorded 339 apprehensions, a significant drop from nearly 16,000 over the same period in 2023. The Austrian Interior Ministry attributes these figures to enhanced enforcement and cooperation measures with neighboring Hungary. Additionally, Austrian police have taken part in Operation Fox, a joint effort aimed at combating migrant smuggling and irregular border crossings.

2026 Asylum Figures Continue to Decrease

The July data follows a pattern of lower asylum numbers recorded during the first half of 2026. Austria received approximately 5,000 asylum applications in that period, with departures surpassing new claims. Interior Minister Gerhard Karner has presented these figures as part of the country’s latest migration report. Voluntary return programs for Syrians persisted, with 240 Syrian nationals leaving Austria in July according to official figures.

The current statistics clearly indicate a year-on-year reduction in both new first-time asylum applications and overall asylum filings. The 244 first-time claims in July mark the lowest point in a decade as highlighted by government data, with the broader total of 840 for the month. The count from January to July—5,743 applications—remains significantly below the 2025 figures. Austrian authorities continue to classify these monthly data as part of their ongoing asylum and migration reporting, which includes separate figures for applications, departures, transfers, and border apprehensions.
