VIENNA, AUSTRIA / RankWire.AI / – Austria is developing BEACONSAT, its inaugural military satellite and the largest spacecraft built domestically so far. This satellite aims to identify and examine disruptions impacting global navigation satellite systems, including GPS and Galileo. The planned launch for BEACONSAT is scheduled for February 2027, using a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. The initiative focuses on detecting jamming and spoofing signals from space while collecting data on the timing and locations of navigation system disturbances.

Serving as a technology demonstrator, BEACONSAT is part of a multi-year research and development effort. Jamming refers to radio interference that obstructs or diminishes satellite navigation signals, whereas spoofing involves transmitting false data to mislead receivers into computing incorrect positions. Satellite navigation is critical for aircraft, ships, vehicles, drones, emergency services, and various other systems. The Austrian Defence Ministry anticipates that the data gathered will enhance operational processes and improve understanding of GNSS interference.
GATE Space, a Schwechat-based space technology firm, is the lead entity responsible for the BEACONSAT project and its overall execution. Established in 2022 as a spin-off from TU Wien, GATE Space specializes in chemical propulsion systems that enable satellites to maneuver in orbit. For this project, the company provides the propulsion system, satellite structure, and thermal management technology. To date, it has completed over 8,000 hot-fire engine tests near Vienna Airport under both atmospheric and vacuum conditions.
Core technological components originate from Austrian firms
Several European companies have contributed vital systems to Austria’s first military satellite. Graz-based IGASPIN supplies technology capable of detecting and analyzing GNSS interference with high precision. Denmark’s Space Inventor provides additional satellite components, including the onboard computer. The project integrates commercial space hardware with systems initially developed for the BEACONSAT demonstration mission. Austria’s Federal Ministry for Innovation, Mobility and Infrastructure has also supported GATE Space through Austria Wirtschaftsservice, providing approximately 750,000 euros in funding.
The European Space Agency is actively involved in supporting and co-financing the mission via its ESA Marketplace program, aimed at technology demonstrations. This initiative enables commercially available space technologies to undergo testing for security-related applications. Austrian officials describe BEACONSAT as a demonstrator rather than an independent operational satellite. The project’s goal is to collect data on satellite navigation signal interference from orbit, which will inform the Defence Ministry’s efforts as Austria advances its military space capabilities.
Integration into Austria’s expanding space program
A new organizational unit within Austria’s Defence Ministry is being established to focus on space services, including satellite communications, navigation, and reconnaissance. BEACONSAT is a part of this expanding framework, with a specific emphasis on navigation interference. The ministry’s military space strategy aims for the Austrian Armed Forces to move beyond merely utilizing space services toward managing space infrastructure and systems. This strategy was adopted in 2023, with plans extending into 2035 and beyond.
The scheduled launch in February 2027 remains the target, with a Falcon 9 expected to deliver the satellite into orbit. Post-deployment, BEACONSAT will collect and analyze GNSS interference data as part of its research mission. The initiative is a collaboration involving Austria’s Defence Ministry, GATE Space, and various specialized European technology firms. It will be Austria’s first military satellite mission and a testbed for domestically developed systems designed to monitor disruptions to GPS, Galileo, and other satellite navigation services.
