Apple brings OLED and Touch to new MacBook Pro

CUPERTINO, California / ConSynSer / – Apple has introduced a new MacBook Pro with a PROLED XDR display, bringing a tandem OLED screen and Touch to the Mac for the first time. The laptops come in 14-inch and 16-inch models powered by the M5 Pro and M5 Max chips. Apple announced the launch on October 28. Pre-orders opened the same day, with availability from Friday, November 6.

The display offers up to 2,000 nits of peak HDR and SDR brightness and a 10,000,000:1 contrast ratio. It has a variable refresh rate from 10Hz to 120Hz and covers both the P3 and Adobe RGB colour ranges. Apple said the panel reaches more than 80% of the Rec. 2020 colour space for HDR video work. Each display is calibrated in the factory for consistency. The panel also minimises internal reflections common in traditional OLED designs.

Johny Srouji, Apple’s chief hardware officer, called the new MacBook Pro a monumental step forward for the Mac. He said PROLED XDR is the world’s best laptop display and combines tandem OLED technology with advanced algorithms in the display engine. Srouji said Touch and the performance of the new chips give professionals a new way to interact with their content. The display engine controls each pixel at a sub-millisecond level.

Touch and Dynamic Island come to Mac

The touch sensor is built directly into the display panel rather than layered on top, reducing latency. Users can scroll, pinch to zoom, drag and drop items and tile windows with their fingers. Designers can draw across the whole screen, and musicians can play software instruments on the display. Many existing apps work with Touch immediately because macOS translates touches into clicks. A redesigned hinge gives greater stability when the screen is touched.

Third-party apps including Microsoft Office, Zoom, Adobe Lightroom, DaVinci Resolve, Blender and Cinema 4D will add Touch support later this year. The Dynamic Island, first seen on iPhone, now arrives on the Mac. It hosts Spotlight, Live Activities and Siri AI, letting users search, take calls or control music. With Live Activities, users can accept AirDrop requests or pause a song with a tap. Apple also updated its iPhone 18 Pro with camera and AI upgrades in September.

Thinner design with up to 24 hours battery

The 14-inch model weighs 3 pounds, half a pound less than before, while the 16-inch version weighs 4 pounds, 0.7 pounds lighter. Screen sizes grow to 14.2 and 16.3 inches thanks to slimmer borders. Battery life reaches up to 24 hours. The machines support up to 128GB of unified memory, up to 16TB of storage, three Thunderbolt 5 ports, Wi-Fi 7 and an improved six-speaker sound system.

The 14-inch model with M5 Pro starts at $2,899 in the United States, and the 16-inch M5 Pro version at $3,399. M5 Max models start at $4,499 and $4,799. The laptops run macOS 27, which includes Siri AI and Apple Intelligence features. Pre-orders are available in 30 countries and regions. The launch follows the iPhone Duo, Apple’s first foldable smartphone, unveiled in September. Apple said the new MacBook Pro uses 55% recycled content overall.
